What are the benefits of professional qualifications?
There are over 100 professional organizations in the United Kingdom each offers their own certification of professional standards, but why do people take professional qualifications and what value they have for employees and employers.
UK professional qualifications awarded by professional bodies that provide what is known as a charter for certain industries. Charters in the UK are issued by the sovereign. The purpose of the qualifications of these bodies offer is to accredit professionals in the field and ultimately maintain the integrity and competence in this profession.
Obtaining a professional certification or accreditation from your industry body, is widely acknowledged as an acceptance of your professional status in this industry. Most students who sit professional qualifications are already practicing in their professional field these certificates away from educational qualifications, such as bachelor degrees and national vocational qualifications (NVQ's). This leads us back to the question if people who sit professional qualifications are already practitioners in this sector (and often high flying within the profession) why there is a need for professional certification?
Professional, diplomas and accreditations have some advantages, but primarily they demonstrate that this professionals has reached an industry-standard in terms of competence in their field. For example, large numbers of people adopt the title of marketing, although much of this means only that they serve a function within the marketing department of an organization or company, but not necessarily being trained and professional marketers. For career marketing professionals a diploma issued by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) describes these marketing people from those who merely serves some marketing function in their job description.
For an employer or an employer to hire, professional skills serve a purpose in helping them to establish the competence of their employees, which is often a difficult challenge, especially in larger organizations with many employees, where it is easier for people to slip through the woodwork.
There is also a process up upgrading and training in most professional skills. Using marketing skills such as re-marketing is a diverse industry with many specialty is such as branding, advertising, online, strategy, pricing, to name a few. By that specialize professionally in one or more of these disciplines the person's professional skills and knowledge to other parts of the marketing spectrum can be removable. By taking a professional marketing qualification, however, that the person gets a full view of all the different areas in marketing. Although they may be specialist, this industry wide knowledge often proves highly valued by employees and employers.
For employees the additional advantage to take a professional qualification, is to increase one's market value as a skilled worker, leading to the promotions and salary increases, either within their current role, or when searching for a new position elsewhere.
