Business Research … how?
I find it hard to find out how you can get information on companies, primarily financial statements. I am a complete newbie to the investing world, so please bear with me. 1 – How do you get access to old reviews by the SEC? For example, I can only find 10Q's for GEICO in 1995, although the company has been around much longer. Is there another database? 2 – If a company does not file with the SEC on how to go about researching them? Who do you contact themselves in the company? What is the proper etiquette? Especially I am interested in receiving information on a number of subsidiaries and privately owned companies. 3 – Are there any free downloadable databases the stock index that contains basic metrics (P / E, capitalization, etc.)? Any information you can share about how independent, deep research on companies will be appreciated. Thank you. * Apparently searchable SEC only go back to 1994 with Edgar. How do you find them before that? *
Electronic filing through EDGAR wa soly introduced in 1995. Then you have to put in a request to the SEC to get past opinions, or you can use other financial information providers. (As Thomson Financial or S & P). There are other repositories of information about companies like Hoover, but for detailed information assets, it will cost you nothing. If you are a student at a large university, you may be able to geton the WRDS database, otherwise it would be expensive to access.
