How do I get advertisers on board for my Magazine Project?
I start a small magazine and need advertisers to help finance it. I targeted companies here in my home town. How can I present this opportunity for them? Should I call, go in person, send a letter, e-mail?? Must I do a "fake" magazine to show them what it would be like giving them more interested? Any insight will prove valuable. If you have a link that discusses this issue even better.
I am an ex-newspaper publisher, but has been involved in specialty shops publications. (I have also written two business books, but now just freelance.) The biggest mistake new publishers do not have enough money for their startup. I've seen lots of new titles coming out with the first track and then go down because there is no money for the second and third questions. Even if you have success in getting advertisers on board, you have to extend them credit – they are businesses, they will expect to have 30 days to pay their bill. Can you survive so long? For the actual magazine: 1) write a business plan (Who is this targeted to have their competition, why would you buy an ad in your title and why would a reader want you? If you fill a hole?) 2) developing a marketing plan. How you can have your known title? The previous poster said Chamber of Commerce. This is important. Introduce yourself to them, ask them for their input (not writing stories, but weaknesses in local coverage or thing that is missing). When you have a mock up of your mag and has an idea of readership and demographics, as well as space, ask for the word (Map) to a department meeting. 3) Find out your costs. This is part of the business plan, but make sure you know what it will cost you to print and distribute your title printer postage, staff, office, office supplies, computers, designers, distribution, marketing … 4) Timing: when you start is very important. Companies working with budgets. You is will not get them to jump on board right away, because they have committed themselves to the radio, local newspapers, leaflets, TV, etc. 5) If you know all the answers to the above, so do a targeted mailing to key advertisers. THEN follow up with an in-person sales calls. It is harder for people to say no to your face. But you want to use e-mail first, so that you are not completely cold-calls. But you need to come see the people within 48 hours of your mailing list so they can remember and think about you. It is A lot of work to launch a new title. It's exhausting. You'll be broke for a while and it will take over your social life. A lot of people want to offer moral support but no cash. It can happen, but cover as much of your bases BEFORE you print the first problem, because you will not have time when you start. Good luck.
As seen in Home Business Magazine!
